The Bible is True and Apologist Frank Turek Can Prove It

Apologist Frank Turek doesn’t shy away from difficult questions. As a Christian speaker, Frank spends a lot of time traveling to college campuses across the country answering questions from young people who want to know why Christian’s believe what they believe.

Some college kids today behave a little like the ancient Greeks from the apostle Paul’s time. When Paul spoke to the Greeks at Mars Hill, they wanted logical proof, if Paul was going to convince them to believe in his God, his argument had to be convincing enough to win them over. Here is part of what Paul said to them:

…God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

Paul wanted to show the Athenians that there was no logic to believing in the idols they worshiped. The true God does not need anything and does not exist to do our will. Rather God, who made all mankind in his image, made us so that we might know him.

Some of the Athenians mocked Paul after he spoke. Today, there are still “logical” men who mock Christians for believing what they believe and that is why young people need to hear from apologists like Frank Turek. When Frank debates an Atheist or answers questions from an audience, he doesn’t deflect hard to answer questions with “Because the Bible says so.” The Bible is filled with truth, but truth is always supported by reason. The task of an apologist is to show why the Bible is right in order to demonstrate, just as Paul did, that the God we worship is the true God. A God who created the rules of logic, the laws of science, and every other demonstration of reason in a world that atheists’ try to claim is nothing more than the result of a random accident.

Ready to learn from one of the best apologists in the world? Frank Turek is traveling to the Mediterranean on a footsteps of Paul cruise featuring 7 days on a 5-star cruise ship and stops in Rome, Corinth, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete, Cenchreae, and of course, the city of Athens! During this time you will get to listen to Frank’s teaching while exploring some of the places where the apostle Paul did his missionary work in the days of the Early Church. This will be an incredible experience for Christian travelers looking for a chance to learn while relaxing and taking in the wonders of the Mediterranean!

Eli Shukron’s Newest Archaeological Find

Renown Archaeologist Eli Shukron has made the news once again. In todays feature on the jewishpress.com, Eli Shukron was interviewed on the newest archaeological discovery of a beautifully preserved, stone weight with the word Beka engraved on it. Shukron, who directed the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities department, explains in his interview the significance of the weight saying,

“When the half-shekel tax was brought to the Temple during the First Temple period, there were no coins, so they used silver ingots. In order to calculate the weight of these silver pieces they would put them on one side of the scales and on the other side they placed the Beka weight. The Beka was equivalent to the half-shekel, which every person from the age of twenty years and up was required to bring to the Temple.”

According to Shukron, “Beka weights from the First Temple period are rare; however this weight is even rarer, because the inscription on it is written in mirror script and the letters are engraved from left to right instead of right to left. It can therefore be concluded that the artist who engraved the inscription on the weight specialized in engraving seals, since seals were always written in mirror script so that once stamped the inscription would appear in regular legible script. “Apparently, the seal craftsman got confused when he engraved the inscription on the weight and mistakenly used mirror script as he was used to doing. From this mistake we can learn about the general rule: The artists who engraved weights during the First Temple period were the same artists who specialized in creating seals.”

See the full article and video interview here.

This sifting project in the Emek Tzurim National Park, is regularly featured on our Living Passages Israel Tours. Guests of the tour can take part in the archaeological experience by joining a team of archaeologists at the sifting site, where artifacts such as this stone weight, other coins, arrowheads, pottery, jewelry and metals can be discovered in the excavated soil. Even more exciting is that Eli Shukron has partnered with Living Passages to guide our Israel Travelers through his discoveries in the City of David.

Alaska Vacation for Families with a Visit to the Iditarod Racing Dogs

There is no U.S. state that has Alaska’s extremes. With towering snowcapped mountains year-round, creeping glaciers, the midnight sun, and all-day darkness, the Alaskan landscape can be as chilling as it is captivating.

Beyond the topography and elements, the people and the culture have their own unique draw. One of the quintessential sports in Alaska is dogsledding.

Dogsledding once was a primary mode of transportation for many Alaskans and helped secure mail routes and other freight movements in Alaska. The snowmobile changed Alaska’s reliance on dogs, but mushers still use their teams of dogs for transportation, hauling, and fun. For those who book by January 1, 2019, you will get your fill of the latter with a free dogsled tour by Heather Siirtola.

Heather is a four-time Iditarod veteran who has made dogsledding a way of life. The Iditarod is a 1,000-mile race from Anchorage, in south-central Alaska, to Nome, on the western Bering Sea. It traces a course through rough terrain made of mountains, rivers, forests, tundra, and coastline.

It is known for its brutal intensity that comes from the combination of the weather, terrain, distance, and strategy.

Heather offers tours of her facility and a chance to meet her dogs. When asked about what makes sled dogs special Heather told us, “Sled dogs are unique, not only being work dogs of yesteryear but can cover more mileage faster than most other animals in the wild.” She brings 18 years of sledding experience and a team of dogs that areraring to go. Always ready to go partly because Heather told us it is not uncommon for her dogs to have acupuncture and massage done on them.

Join our Alaska vacation for families with Buddy and Kay Davis of Answers in Genesis in the summer of 2019. This tour is filled with a variety of Alaskan experiences for the whole family, such as a tundra safari, fishing, nature walk, gold panning, and a visit to Denali National Park. Buddy will offer creation-based teachings inspired by the surrounding topography and wildlife.

Book your Alaska Family Vacation before the end of the year and you can visit Heatherand her dogsled team for free.

Why Corinth is the Perfect Teaching Site on a Footsteps of Paul Greece Tour

Corinth is famous for being the early church to which Paul wrote the letters of First and Second Corinthians, containing some of the most well-known passages in the entire Bible. Along with the letters Paul wrote to the church there, he also visited and helped to establish a community of believers in the city. The population was likely 750,000 or more in Paul’s time and the city was absolutely central to trade and commerce. The size, historical significance, and Biblical importance of the city make it a crucial stop on any footsteps of Paul Greece tour. The city was important in ancient times and the lessons and instructions Paul wrote to the young church are particularly relevant now, when the world is returning to an idolatry of immoral lifestyles.

  • The Bema Where Paul Stood Trial

Looking for something unique on a Christian tour? How about heading to the place where the apostle Paul himself stood trial before Gallio, the pro-consul of Corinth. But it wasn’t the Greek people of Corinth who brought Paul to trial, instead, it was the Corinthian Jews who claimed that Paul had violated Jewish Law. The Bema was the raised platform from which pro-consul Gallio pronounced judgment on Paul.

  • Acrocorinth: The Ancient Fortress and Temple of the Corinthians

High above the city of Corinth, there is a steep rock that overlooks the town. Rising 1800 feet above the plains, Acrocorinth was once the seat of the Temple of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, whose worship contributed to the sexual immorality that Corinth was infamously known for.

  • Erastus, the Chamberlain of the City

Paul had many friends in Corinth and one of the friends is named in Roman 16:23 was “Erastus the chamberlain of the city”. What is interesting about Erastus is that his existence seems to be confirmed by an inscription found east of the theater in Corinth. The inscription reads, ‘Erastus for his aedileship paved (this) at his own expense.’ Erastus seems to have been a man of wealth and position and was a friend of Paul’s, who contributed to the improvement and infrastructure of the city.

  • The Synagogue of Corinth

The synagogue of Corinth was a hub of public debate when Paul came to the city. Acts 18:4 says “Every Sabbath he would argue in the Synagogue and would try to convince the Jews and Greeks”. It was because of Paul’s relentless preaching that the Corinthian Jews hatched their plot to put Paul on trial before the Roman Pro-consul Gallio.

  • The Port of Cenchreae

Like several other Biblical figures, the apostle Paul dedicated himself to the Lord with a Nazarite Vow. According to the book of Numbers, those who took a Nazarite Vow were not to:

  1. Partake in any fermented drink or consume grapes in any form.
  2. Cut their hair for the duration of the vow.
  3. Go near a dead body

When Paul stopped at the port of Cenchreae it was, according to the book of Acts, to have his head shaved in keeping with his vow. Biblical historians are unsure of whether Paul was beginning or concluding his vow in Cenchreae, but we know from archaeology that Cenchreae was a port city just outside of Corinth. The submerged remains of the Cenchreae Synagogue can still be seen from the shores.

Corinth is frequently chosen as a teaching destination by leaders on a footsteps of Paul Greece tour. The many points of Biblical and historical interest the city has to offer make it an ideal spot for teaching and instruction.

The Bible and Science Collide in Grand Canyon Christian Tours

Was the Grand Canyon really created as the result of a global flood? The debate has been ongoing for a long time, but according to Russ Miller the evidence was never in doubt. From the beginning, the Grand Canyon was proof of a world-wide flood and yet, it has taken the majority of the scientific community to catch up.

Geologists now think Grand Canyon grew in quick spurts from massive flooding…”
– National Geographic

So, why have secular scientific resources like National Geographic been hesitant to admit this? Because admitting that the creation of the Grand Canyon was the result of flooding seems to partially corroborate one of the Bible’s most well-known stories. A story that secular scientists like Bill Nye have publicly ridiculed, the story of Noah’s Flood.

The missing layers are picked up in the Grand Staircase, which includes the soaring cliffs of Bryce and Zion. Bryce forms the top of the Staircase, where the massive erosion event ended, leaving spires and arches in the multi-colored limestones. Zion’s lofty sandstone cliffs and canyons, adorned in pink and red hues, form the middle of the Staircase.” – Russ Miller.

Many evolutionists have tried to lay claim to the scientific evidence of the Grand Canyon, attempting to show how its geological makeup supports an evolutionary view of history. But creation expert Russ Miller reaches out to Christians and non-Christians alike to show them the truth about the geology of the Grand Canyon and the amazing work of God in creation and at long-last, the rest of the scientific community is catching up.

For a long-time scientists believed that Grand Canyon was carved out slowly over millions of years …But new research has turned both theories upside down. Geologists now think that Grand Canyon grew in quick spurts from massive flooding…over 750,000 years. (National Geographic for Kids, March 2005, p. 5).

So, are you ready to see the proof for yourself? Travel to the Southwest to explore the evidence of the flood on our Grand Canyon Christian tours! Or check out our roster of Christian tour itineraries from all over the world.

Four Reasons Why Our South Africa Creation Safari is Perfect for Families

Maybe it has been years since you took your family on vacation. Let’s be honest, traveling with babies and toddlers has its challenges. Now that your kids are a bit older, however, a vacation might be back on your mind. But since it isn’t something you get to do all the time, you want to make it count.

Our South Africa Creation Safari is the perfect option. This Christian tour is an awe-inspiring trip for both children and adults. With dramatic African animals, creation teachings, star gazing, relaxation opportunities and children’s activities all packed into 10 days, you are sure to come home with memories that have bonded your family and lessons that will build both yours and your children’s faith.

Here are four reasons why our South African Creation Safari is perfect for families.

  1. It’s adventure with relaxation

Often when it comes to vacation, some want relaxation, while others want adventure. This tour has the best of both. On the adventure front, your family can take early-morning game drives and see many of the Big Five animals, such as lions, elephants, and rhinos. You can ride elephants, walk with lions and see guides feed an assortment of safari animals.

But after all the excitement, there will be opportunities for massage, lounging by the pool, golfing, fishing, leisurely fireside dinners, and morning coffee at sunrise.

  1. There are activities for you and activities for kids

Not all destinations are conducive to children. How often do you get excited for an activity only to have your kid’s groan at the prospective boredom? Or maybe you’d like to try something, but it’s dangerous or unadvised for kids.

On this tour, while you get a massage, the kids can play a sports game at the lodge. When you go walk with the lions, our hosts will take the children to view the baby lions. Our scholars will have teachings adapted both for adults and for children.

  1. You don’t have to worry about planning anything. Just get your kids on the plane.

Part of the stress of traveling with children is figuring out the logistics beforehand. Where will they sleep? Where will you eat every day? Can you fit your family in the cab? You won’t have to worry about any of it on this tour. We take care of all the details for you.

It’s the best of vacation without the headaches. You simply show up, and we will take care of the rest. The tour is pre-paid, so you won’t have to take out your wallet and negotiate price. A vacation without planning, navigating, or having to problem-solve is a true vacation.

  1. The teachings are geared toward both adults and children and will build your family’s faith

A family learning together about God’s creation in a dramatic setting like South Africa creates a special bond. Seeing powerful animals like lions and elephants; watching a sunrise across the plains or staring up into the vast night sky at the countless array of stars is an experience your family may have never had before. That you are all there, experiencing it together, will give you a collective appreciation for God’s creation in new ways.

You will have topics to dig into as a family for months and years to come.. Your children won’t forget this vacation – and neither will you.

Check out our South Africa Creation Safari. It’s the vacation your family has been waiting for.

Melchizedek Dead Sea Scroll Found at Qumran

Genesis 14:18-20 (KJV)

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Of all the unusual individuals that show up in Scripture, Melchizedek, the King of Salem, is one of the most fascinating. Throughout the Old and New Testament, Melchizedek is only mentioned in three books: Genesis, Psalms, and Hebrews, with Genesis being the only book where he appears in person. The spiritual authority of Melchizedek and the way in which the author of Genesis brings the readers attention to the absence of any genealogy relating to Melchizedek, indicates the uniqueness of Melchizedek as a figure of Scripture. Melchizedek has no genealogy, he is a priest of God during a time when there were very few godly men, and the author of Hebrews draws comparisons between Melchizedek and Jesus, saying that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham (Hebrews 7:7). Similarly, in John 8 the Jews ask Jesus if he is greater than Abraham.

Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
– John 8:54-57

The parallels between Jesus and Melchizedek are so striking, that some Biblical scholars have wondered if Melchizedek could have been a manifestation of Jesus before the Nativity. However, the references made in Hebrews, stating that Jesus “is a priest after the order of Melchizedek”, would be redundant if Melchizedek had himself been a manifestation of Christ. What is certain is that Melchizedek was a great priest of God and that he was recognized as such by Abraham, David, and the author of the Book of Hebrew.

Very little information is given in Scripture about Melchizedek, however, among the discoveries made at the Qumran caves, was a scroll dating back to the 1st Century BC that gives more information about the importance of Melchizedek the priest.

Read the full text of the Melchizedek Dead Sea Scroll 11Q13 here or visit the Shrine of the Book (where the Dead Sea Scrolls are now kept) on a Christian Israel tour!

Why you should go on one of our Holy Land Tours

The city of Jerusalem seen through a window, facing Temple Mount on a Holy Land tour

As Carolyn stood on the Garden of Gethsemane during her Holy Land tour with Living Passages, the weight of the anguish Christ experienced there, just mere hours before he faced the cross, fell on her.

She had to sit down on a bench outside of the Gethsemane Chapel to sob.

She had wanted to go on a Holy Land tour since she was a teenager. But life’s ups and downs pulled her in other directions. Two years after her husband died, she stepped out in faith and signed up for a tour.

“To be able to go in such luxury, with such great leaders and guides, made the trip everything I had hoped for all my life,” she said. “This was my number one bucket list wish.”

There is something about experiencing Biblical Israel that has a profound effect on a Christian. Just like Carolyn found, quiet moments standing in the places Christ stood, taught, lived and died is unlike any other vacation experience.

Why is a Holy Land tour special?

It’s no secret to any Christian that the story arch of the Bible played out in the Holy Land. The Jews are God’s chosen people.

Before you think this a designation that smacks of arrogance and elitism, consider the responsibility of being chosen. The failures and successes of the Israelites through the centuries is inscribed in Scripture for billions of people to read. The opportunity they had to be close to God only magnified their lack of righteousness. It’s a humble mantle to bear.

It might seem strange that God choose this people group, especially knowing how they would stray from Him again and again. Hebrew slaves seem like an unlikely bunch from which to draw Christ’s bloodline. Yet, that is often how God works. Jesus did not come as ruler, or an angel, but as one of us, from lowly beginnings. That was intentional. The story that played out in the Holy Land is laced with humble beginnings, inadequacies, and, except for Christ himself, human flaw.

But how encouraging is that for us, who are also fallen sinful people?

The Israelites story is an important one. The Bible details the course of their history, their movements, their genealogies. The amazing thing is that many of these places, where these stories occurred, still exist. We can still see them with our own eyes. That’s what makes the Holy Land special.

Why go to Biblical Israel now?

Anyone who watches the news gets the impression that residents of Jerusalem are dodging bombs and hunkered in shelters daily. That is far from the truth. Yes, there are areas that may hold more risk, but most of the Holy Land is as safe as any other developed country.

Still, it is often at the eye of political firestorms, so there is no guarantee it will always be this way.

We have read the end of the story, but we don’t know when that end is coming. We don’t know how much time we have. There may be a day that travel to Biblical Israel is no longer possible or safe. Or maybe that day won’t come in our lifetimes. We don’t know. What we do know is that we can go now. Why not take advantage of that?

So why are Holy Land tours worth taking?

It’s one thing to read Scripture from 6,000 miles away, but it is something unique to stand in the places where the events occurred as we read it. It gives us context we have never had before. It explains things that are difficult to explain in simple text. With our own eyes, we can gain new understanding about the Bible, the God we serve and Christ.

The Bible tells a story that as Christians we need to know fully. What better way to hear and understand it than to see it for ourselves on one of our Holy Land tours?

Carolyn said for her the experience in Israel still brings Scripture alive. No longer a far-off place she can’t envision, she remembers that she was right there, standing in the places the Bible describes, every time she reads it.

Interested in one of our Holy Land tours? We have several upcoming tours that make stops in Biblical Israel. Each of our Christian tours includes expert scholars who can offer added insight into biblical history. Let us know if we can help you experience the places you have previously read about in the Bible.

Tour for the mobility impaired could your chance to see Israel

Justin Peters tour for the mobility impairedMaybe you have dreamed of going to Israel for years, but life’s busyness got in the way. The years have passed, and now you feel like you missed your chance. Maybe getting around isn’t as easy as it used to be. Or you don’t want to hold other people back. Going to another country sounds overwhelming, if not impossible. After all, you assume there couldn’t possibly be a tour for the mobility impaired available.

If that’s you, we have a special tour to Israel designed with you in mind.

Tour for the mobility impaired

Justin Peters of Justin Peters Ministries is leading a unique tour, and since he uses a special chair, he has room for another to join the group on our bus that is specifically equipped with you in mind. Justin took his first trip with us last year and this year, we are using a bus outfitted for quick on/off which has access to the front entrances of all our stops.  It is really an amazing opportunity for the right individuals. This is also a great tour for seniors with limited mobility.

Imagine praise and worship on the Mediterranean Sea. Think about taking a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee – the same sea Jesus often crossed. You could travel down the Palm Sunday Road, envisioning as you go what it might have been like when Jesus rode a donkey down that same passage. You’ll visit the Pools of Bethesda for a private teaching.

These are all experiences that might have seemed out of reach before. They aren’t anymore.

We will have options as well for those who are able to wander further, so all our welcome. But if a wheelchair accessible tour to Israel is what would open the door for you to go, this is a rare opportunity for you.

Finally a wheelchair accessible tour option

If you still have the passion to travel to the Holy Land but need a little assistance in getting around, we are happy to help. These opportunities don’t come along often, if ever. So if you have any desire to go to Israel and see biblical sites first hand, this is your chance. You won’t hold anyone up or inconvenience your group. You won’t have to worry about getting into a place you might get stuck without help. Join Justin Peters as you visit the places Jesus walked and watch Scripture come alive before your eyes.

Read more about the itinerary, the details and see photos of the locations on our Justin Peters Israel tour page.

An exciting time for Biblical tours and the history of Biblical Israel

The goal of Biblical tours of the Holy Land is to help travelers engage in the history of scripture while connecting with fellow believers and strengthening their walk with God. Christian pastors, teachers, and experts often lead groups of believers through the sites of Biblical Israel in the footsteps of Jesus and the apostles. But recent discoveries in the field of Israeli archaeology are changing the way Biblical tours work. While local tradition used to be the basis of belief for where certain events of the Bible took place, archaeological evidence and study are taking the accuracy of Scripture to a new level. Experts like archaeologist Eli Shukron (who discovered the Pool of Siloam where Jesus healed the blind man), Dr. Adolfo Roitman (the Curator of the Dead Sea Scrolls), and Christian theological Professor Dr. Craig Evans, are exploring the ways in which history corresponds to Christian and Jewish texts.

"The House of God is just the stone." Eli Shukron explained, while taking a group of travelers to visit one of the most astonishing finds in Jerusalem archaeology: The Standing Stone of Melchizedek, which, according to Scripture, served as one of the very earliest places of worship and the spot where Abraham brought the first tithe. "...What is the importance, where all that started?" Shukron continued. "Where we are."

Very few Biblical tours go inside the place of the Melchizedek Standing Stone, which Shukron refers to as "Temple Zero". An equally breathtaking sight is the great Isaiah Scroll. Inside the Shrine of the Book, Dr. Adolfo Roitman refers to the Isaiah Scroll as "Our Mona Lisa".

"The most important cultural treasure of the Jewish nation is the great Isaiah Scroll." Says Dr. Roitman. "The second largest scroll discovered in Qumran caves - containing all the sixty-six chapters of the prophet Isaiah you have in your Bibles."

As the modern picture we draw of Biblical Israel becomes clearer, the evidence to support the factual accuracy of the Bible becomes progressively more astonishing. That is why we feel that Christian travelers should have the opportunity to enjoy Biblical tours that bring them face-to-face with the experts and artifacts. In 2019, Dr. Craig Evan, Dr. Adolfo Roitman, and archaeologist Eli Shukron will all be featured on several of our Christian cruise and Biblical Israel tours!

Frank Turek: The Bible doesn’t cover everything

Speaker and author Frank Turek

See the Frank Turek YouTube video below for his take on this topic.

From the surface view, the Bible appears to have some pretty major gaps. What about all of the other people groups in the world, such as the Chinese or Indians and the multitude of story lines that played out in other countries? Why doesn’t the Bible explain dinosaurs? Where were the Vikings or the Native Americans over the centuries?

The Bible’s central story

If you read closely, there is actually a lot you can parse out about creation. But the account of creation sets the stage for the Bible’s main focus: One bloodline. The entire arch of the Bible centers around a single story: the story of Christ.

As the Frank Turek YouTube video below explains, “The purpose of the Bible is not to tell you everything about everything. It’s not to tell you about every animal or every civilization. It’s to tell you about how to get saved and sanctified.”

“That’s the reason the Bible is written. It’s not written to tell you everything about everything, just the most important thing.”

The Bible is not an encyclopedia or an exhaustive explanation of geology or history. In fact, God often seems to prefer to leave some things a mystery. But it covers the most important thing. It tells the story of the bloodline of Christ, the prophesies surrounding Him, His coming to earth, His dying and Him rising again. It then shifts to prophesying when He will come again. These threads course through Scripture all the wall from the beginning to end.

Frank Turek YouTube video

Check out the below video as Frank Turek discusses this topic on a YouTube video during a Living Passages tour.

What is the Bible really about?

Just as Jesus is to be the center of our lives, He is the center of the biblical account. The Bible tells the greatest story ever told. The most important story every told. Because without Christ, the Bible’s story line would not end with the hope and promise we have today because of His death and Resurrection. Our salvation dictates our eternity, so doesn’t it make sense that the Bible would focus on how to get saved? The timeline of this earth is relatively short compared to eternity. It makes sense that God would focus on the big picture in His words to us.

Teachings by Frank Turek

We’ve been fortunate to hear this and many other teachings by speaker and author Frank Turek of Cross Examined. He has traveled with many of our Christian tour groups and tends to draw many repeat customers. In April of 2019, he will again join us on a cruise from Rome to Athens.

This time, Frank will focus in on the life of the Apostle Paul and the Early Church. We’d love to have you join us on this exciting Christian Cruise! But don’t wait too long. Our tours with Frank tend to book out fast.

8 reasons to try group travel tours

A travel group on a Christian tour

As you are looking at your next vacation, you have two options: You can do it all yourself. Or you could sign up for one of many group travel tours with a travel company. While the DIY travel approach has some advantages, there are far more upsides to group travel than you might realize.

Here are eight reasons you should try traveling with a group:

1. The planning details won’t be so overwhelming.

Booking lodging, transportation, excursions and flights can be a lot of work, especially in foreign countries that you have never been to, where you don’t know the language and aren’t familiar with the currency. Even catching a cab can be a hassle. When you go in a tour group, those things are off your shoulders. All you have to do is pack and show up for your flight while someone else does the work for you.

2. Tried and tested tour stops.

If you’ve never been to your destination, it can be tricky to figure out where you should visit or even where you should eat. As a company that does group travel tours, we have been to these destinations over and over. That means we know the spots are worth a visit and which to skip. For the past two decades, we have been scouting out premier options, as we discussed in our blog about the 10 ultimate Biblical destinations.

3. Safety in numbers.

While we have found travel is safer than people perceive it, some inherent risk still exists. There is also a lot you can do to reduce the risk. One thing is to travel with a group, where there are others with you, watching out for you. You also have an experienced liaison and local guides with you who know the area, where to avoid and can alert you to anything potential safety issues.

4. You can relax more.

Similar to travel preparation, once you are in the country, you don’t have to worry about the details. With a group travel tour, someone is always there to do that for you. Someone else will deal with negotiating tips with the driver. Someone else will figure out an alternative plan if a scheduled event is delayed or canceled. Someone else will pay the bill, while you lounge on your hotel patio.

5. You might find love.

Are you single? For one, traveling alone isn’t for everyone. But there is always the chance you could find love on your trip. Hey, it’s happened before. While there is no guarantee, taking the risk and going on a tour opens you up to the possibility of meeting someone else with similar interests and values as you.

6. Group travel discounts.

As they say, it’s all in who you know. As a tour company, there are various vendors we have access to that the every-day traveler doesn’t. We work with airlines, hotels, restaurants, and other vendors to get the best deals for our travelers. We take advantage of group discounts and contracts to get you the best deal possible. While a solo trip might appear cheaper when you are planning, it’s easy to miss the nickel and dime expenses you will encounter along the way. Having done hundreds of trips, we know what to expect in terms of cost and factor it into your price or give you a heads up from the outset.

7. Experts travel with you on group travel tours.

So many destinations come alive when you have someone who knows a lot about them and can explain the history and context. On our group travel tours, our experts — such as apologetics speaker  Frank Turek or teacher and author Joel Richardson — travel with you, eat dinner with you, provide teaching sessions as you are standing at the sites, and answer your questions. While a self-guided tour through the City of David might sound nice, you might miss the fascinating explanation of all the tucked away biblical events, such as the Melchizedek standing stone or the Pool of Siloam. These are things you only get when you travel with the experts.

8. You’ll make friends for life.

One thing we hear again and again from our travelers is about the relationships they built with the people they met on their tours. These are priceless and often last a lifetime. One of our clients had the teaching pastor on the tour officiate her wedding. Many others have become long-term friends with their tour roommates. When you travel with like-minded people, you connect in ways you might not have expected.

Group travel tours may not be something you had considered in the past. Maybe you didn’t like the idea of not choosing your own itinerary or being with people you don’t know. But the advantages of this type of trip make group tours worth trying out as you are looking at your next vacation. You never know, you might not ever go back to the DIY approach.

The problem of evil with Dr. Lutzer

Below is a video from a previous Reformation Tour to Europe with Dr. Erwin Lutzer of Moody Bible Church. Here, Dr. Lutzer talks about what our response as Christians should be to why God allows evil in the world.

Video Transcript:

Rhonda: (I’m) with Dr. Erwin Lutzer in Prague and Dr. Lutzer gave a fantastic sermon two days ago regarding evil. And I’ve asked him to just repeat a couple of key points. Dr. Lutzer, would you repeat that for our audience?

Dr. Erwin Lutzer: I’m very glad to repeat what I said earlier. I need to say that we’re standing, actually, in Bethlehem Chapel in Prague, and behind me is the pulpit of John Huss, who died at the stake. And one of the things that we think about when we are here in Prague, as even in Germany, is the problem of evil, specifically, as it relates to Adolf Hitler. Because Hitler believed that he was carrying out the will of Providence and what we need to do, as theologians, is distinguish man’s role in evil and God’s role. And the Bible is very clear, first of all, that God rules in the kingdom of men. The scripture says clearly that He puts down some and raises up others … “Behold, I raise up the Chaldeans!” God says.

So, on the one hand, we have to recognize that God is totally under control and is, HAS, everything under control. We also have to recognize that man has responsibility and he is answerable to God. In other words, he’s answerable to God and yet clearly, God “signs-off” on the evil that takes place.

We have to admit that without blinking. Jesus, in the presence of Pilate, said, “You would have no power at all against me unless it was given to you from above.” Now, as Christians, we have to rest in the fact of God’s sovereignty. Rather than it being a stumbling block, we have to know that God knows what He’s doing. We don’t need to know the hidden details of His will and His purposes in order to trust Him.

Now, in conclusion, what do we say to atheists when they talk to us and they say if that’s the kind of God there is that He permits the Holocaust, I’m out of here!? Here’s what we need to say: First of all, that’s one option that many people take but it’s a very unwise option. If God is the kind of God who can permit the Holocaust, you had better prepare to meet Him, because the Bible says that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God!

So, here’s a better option: flee to CHRIST! Come to Him for refuge! The Bible says that He saves us from the wrath to come. So, rather than being angry at God, take advantage of what He has provided! We know that He cares because Jesus came to redeem us and, as a result of that Redemption, you and I can savingly believe and we not need not fear God’s judgment because Jesus bore it for us! You’re a skeptic? Come to Christ, and He’s the one that will receive you and welcome you into everlasting habitations. Thank God for Him!

Rhonda: Wow! thank you so much, Dr. Lutzer, for that concise and powerful message for our audience. I appreciate you being here. Thank you so much!

Dr. Erwin Lutzer’s next trip with Living Passages is a Reformation Tour to Germany and Obergrammergau in 2020. Interested in traveling with him? Sign up to receive email alerts when registration for this tour opens.

Why now is the time to visit Jerusalem

Jerusalem-Dome-of-the-Rock

As Christians, a pilgrimage to Jerusalem has always captured our collective imagination. It is a city rich with the foundations of our faith, where Bible figures walked and our Christ was crucified and rose from the dead. Going there is a profound experience for people who believe the Word of God is true. There is something powerful about walking the steps that Jesus did and seeing the sites mentioned in the Bible.

Jerusalem also has a central role in the future, literally and figuratively, according to Scripture. Jeremiah 3:17 says, “At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.”

It’s tough to deny, God has big plans for this special city.

The city has long held an allure for visitors. From the Temple Mount to the Western Wall to the Citadel or Tower of David, there is so much to see. A vast array of intriguing sites lie at the city as well, and have long been magnets for guests. But in recent years, the draw seems to be that much stronger.

Here is why now is a great time to visit Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is not a static city. Because of the constant excavation taking place, there are always new finds to see.

The archaeological discoveries just keep coming. You can literally watch the City of David be unveiled as the excavation of this area continues. Historians long thought the City of David was the Old City. Discoveries first made about 150 years ago changes this thinking. We wrote more about this in a previous blog post here.

Our tour guide, Eli Shukron, an Israeli archaeologist who has worked with the Israel Antiquities Authority, discovered the Pool of Siloam, where the blind man was healed. He also discovered the Jerusalem Pilgrim Road from the Second Temple era. He made these finds only in the past 25 years.

Even small finds send excitement through the archaeological community. Just recently, a rare coin from the fourth Jewish revolt was found in an ancient Jerusalem drain. Eli told the Haartez, a news source in Israel, that it could have been dropped into the sewage system through the cracks in the road above. Or a Jewish rebel hiding in the sewage system could have lost the coin.

The coin has paleo-Hebrew inscribed on it and was minted in the year 69. That year, Jews had been hiding in the sewage system during their revolt. The coin bears the words, “For the Redemption of Zion.”

This is just one of many archaeological finds this year that breathes life into Scripture and gives insight into history. Year by year, we are learning more about what happened in Jerusalem over the past 2000 years.

Want to join in on a Christian tour to Jerusalem?

You never know, a find could reveal itself while you are visiting on one of our Christian, Old and New Testament tours. Interested in a trip? Go to our Israel tours.

8 tips to help you pack like a pro

Pack like a pro like this man traveling

Packing is an essential part of travel, and surprisingly, how you pack can have a lot of influence on how much you enjoy your trip. Have you ever traveled with the person who is bogged down with three different bags packed to the brim? It certainly doesn’t make crossing the globe any easier. How about the person who didn’t bring a coat to a cooler climate and is either having to buy something last minute or borrow from others? Don’t let this be you.

There is a delicate balance between packing light and having the things that you need. Here are a few tips to help you achieve that balance on your upcoming trip.

1. Use a capsule wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe is a selection of clothing pieces that go well together so you can mix and match. For example, bring two pairs of pants that match all your tops, or a long sleeve shirt you can wear over all of your short-sleeved shirts. Bring accessories you can re-purpose, such as a scarf that can be used as a blanket on the plane or shoes that you can wear with all your outfits. Bring comfortable, loose clothing that you don’t mind spending the whole day in. Avoid white clothing, which can get stained easily.

2. Use travel sized bottles for your toiletries and pack them in a compact travel pouch.

There is no sense in bringing your full-sized shampoo bottles. Bring only what you need in small plastic containers. One handy tip to keep them from leaking is to put a small square of plastic wrap over the mouth of the bottle, then screw on the top. This will keep your bottles from leaking. Putting them in a pouch will keep them together so you can find them quickly when you need them. Pro tip: Include a small spray bottle of Febreze to keep clothing smelling fresh throughout the trip.

3. Leave towels, bedding or bulky items at home.

All the hotels where we will stay will provide bedding and towels. There’s no sense in filling your suitcase with literal fluff. A sarong or camping towel is a nice light alternative for cases when you might need a towel in between stops. But if you don’t want to even bother with that, you will probably get by without. Some hotels in Europe do not provide washcloths, so if you use one regularly that would also be a packable option to bring.

4. Bring one jacket and several layers.

Some of our destinations can be cooler at night or rainy. A jacket, especially one that doubles as a rain jacket, is crucial. Even for warmer destinations, it often cools at night or gets cold on the plane, so you will be glad you have something warmer. You can use combinations of lighter layers to make the jacket warmer or cooler.

5. Roll your clothes instead of folding them when you pack.

Rolling clothes will take up less space in your suitcase than folding. You can further save space by putting items in compression bags or gallon-sized plastic bags and squeezing out the air. This has the side benefit of keeping clean clothes fresher as you are traveling. Just be mindful that airlines restrict the weight of your checked bag generally to 50 pounds or less.

6. Leave valuables at home.

There is a lot you can live without for two weeks. Plus, why add the stress of having to worry about an expensive item or be looking for a safe at every hotel? You will likely be distracted and not as attentive to your valuables. We would hate for you to have anything stolen or misplaced. If you don’t absolutely need it, leave it at home.

7. Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a pair of sandals.

You will be on your feet a lot during our tours, so a good set of shoes is essential. Sandals can be used for dressier occasions, leisure time, and swimming. You’ll be thankful for comfortable walking shoes on long days when our tours take you to places that require lots of walking. Make sure you break them in before your trip if they are new to avoid blisters on your vacation.

8. Pack a small backpack.

One small backpack is great for carrying daily items you might need on your trip, such as a water bottle, wallet, sunscreen, medications or hand sanitizer. It can also double as your carry-on bag, so you can skip an extra bag roller or duffle. A backpack is also more comfortable during long walks than shoulder bags and more maneuverable than a rolling suitcase.

Did we mention you should pack light?

It is a pain to haul a suitcase up and down stairs, in and out of airports, and to and from stops. Our tours often move from hotel to hotel. Think how much time you will waste on your trip gathering your things up and repacking every few days. The more you have, the more likely you are to leave things behind. Trying to keep track of multiple bags, especially in a group, can be tricky during transfers. The general rule of thumb is to lay out everything you think you will need, then put away half of it. There is so much to see and experience; why spend your precious time worrying about all your stuff when you could be enjoying your new surroundings? NASA technology reveals text from Dead Sea Scrolls

Dead Sea Scrolls

For decades since the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, dozens of tiny fragments of the manuscripts have appeared blank.

But archaeologists have used Nasa technology to unveil script on the fragments. It has opened the door to see text that previously was indistinguishable from the parchment paper they were written on, which has darkened with age.

The technology is a multispectral imaging camera developed for NASA’s Hubble program. The camera used infrared wavelengths that helped increase the contrast between the paper and the ink.

These fragments now offer puzzle pieces of text from the books of Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Jubilees (known as the lesser Genius) and The Temple Scroll. There is also text giving instructions on conducting temple services and a shorter version of Psalm 147:1.

Experts were excited to find text not previously associated with other writings. That means there may be other manuscripts we don’t yet know about.

Dead Sea Scrolls Discovery

Qumran, where Dead Sea Scrolls were found

The caves of Qumran.

Bedouin shepherds found the Dead Sea Scrolls between 1947 and 1956 in caves along the Dead Sea. On some of our tour you can visit one of the main caves where they were found, called Qumran.

Thousands of fragments, which contain some of the oldest copies discovered of the Hebrew Torah books, were found throughout Qumran’s 11 caves. Experts believe the scrolls were smuggled out Jerusalem during First Jewish Revolt (A.D. 66-70) against the Roman Empire.

Significance of the Manuscripts

These documents give us a glimpse into Judaism in the Second Temple period and validate and enhance the Hebrew Bible. They are dated from 250 BC to 68 AD, which puts them much closer to the original author than previously discovered scripts.

While there are many non-biblical scripts included in the Dead Sea scrolls, they too enhance our understanding of the the biblical ones and the time period. They place research closer to the origins of Scripture than ever before.

See Dead Sea Scrolls for Yourself

The new pieces of text are a timely discovery for those who are booking tours and cruises with us in the next year. Dr. Adolfo Roitman who is curator of the Shrine of the Book in Israel, where the Dead Sea Scrolls are housed, will be on hand to delve into the significance of the scrolls.

If you are interested in seeing the scrolls and hearing Dr. Roitman speak on these exciting manuscripts first hand, sign up for one of our Israel cruises or tours in 2019.
